Abstract

A Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is a production system consisting of a set of identical and/or complementary numerically controlled machines which are connected through an automated guided vehicle (AGV) system. A common layout for Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is Loop Layout Network with machines arranged in a cycle and materials transported in only one direction around the cycle. Evaluation of this layout is usually performed by estimating the traffic congestion, i.e., the number of cycles spent by each part in the network until its processing through the required machines is completed. This paper addresses the unidirectional Loop Layout Design Problem (LLDP) using a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm; a modern meta-heuristic from the field of volutionary computation. The results of the PSO are compared with the bench mark problem available in the literature. The results obtained by this heuristics are consistently better than earlier popular methods.
